What is SIM?

What does this term i.e SIM refers to?

Well this word SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module or Subscriber Identification Module. Actually this is an integrated circuit and this is intended to securely and safely store the IMSI number and also its related key and so on. IMSI stands for International Mobile Subscriber Identity. This is done and used to identify and authenticate subscribers on mobile telephony devices like that of phones and systems. Also it is possible to store contact information on many SIM cards. Also the thing regarding SIM is that they are always used on GSM phones. For CDMA phones, they are needed for latest and newer LTE capable handsets. Apart from the very thing, SIM cards can also be used in satellite phones.

Dear readers of this page. there are a lot of beneficial things about subscriber identify module. So guys just read the following with having patience. Here I am providing you the some of the bulleted points about SIM that is subscriber identify module.

  • The SIM circuit is part of the function of a Universal Integrated Circuit physical smart card, that is usually formed of the PVC with embedded contacts and semiconductors. SIM cards are transferable between different mobile devices.
  • Apart from the above things, a SIM card contains its unique serial number(ICCID), international mobile subscriber identity number, also security authentication and ciphering information.
  • Also there is temporary information related to the local network, also a list of the services the user has.
  • One of them also includes two passwords. They are a personal identification number known as PIN and Personal Unblocking code known as PUK. The former is for ordinary and simple use. One the other hand the later is for personal unblocking code.

History of SIM

Here I am going to share some of the historical facts about  subscriber identify module. This will be really useful to you to you in sense you will know more about the subscriber identify module. The SIM was at the very starting specified by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute in the specification with the number TS 11.11. Actually this specification describes the physical and logical behaviour of the subscriber identify module. Also 3GPP iis now responsible for the any type of further development of applications like SIM and USIM and ETSI for the future development of the physical card UICC.

This is all about the history of the subscriber identify module.  Let me move on the other topic.

Design of Subscriber Identify Module

Well here I will share design of the subscriber identify module. Now let me come on the point directly. Dear readers if you want to know about the design and so of the SIM then this section will be very beneficial for all of you. So guys and girls please go through the following points that are listed below:-

  • There are three operating voltages for SIM cards. They are 5V , 3V and the third one is 1.8V. Also the operating voltage of the majority of SIM cards launched before 1998 was 5V. SIM cards produced subsequuently are compatible with 3v and 5v. The latest card supports all the three type.
  • Apart from the above mentioned points, also Modern SIM cards permits all applications for loading and this is actually when the SIM is in use by the subscriber.
  • The mentioned applications communicate with the handset or a server using SIM application toolkit, that was initially specified by 3GPP in TS 11.14.

Hence dear these are some of the things regarding the design of the subscriber Identify Module.

Definition of SIM

So guys till now you have come through quite a few features and things including the history as well as design material of the subscriber identify module. In fact a subscriber identify module is a smart card inside of a GSM cellular phone that actually encrypts voice as well as data transmissions and stores data about the specific user so that the user can identified and authenticated to the network supplying the phone service. Also a SIM is popular as SIM card.

Another thing is that the subscriber identify module also stores data such as personal phone settings specific to the user as well as phone numbers. A SIM can be moved from one phone to another phone. Also different there can be insertion of different SIMs into any GSM phone. Let me give you an example, suppose a user has one phone. But the differentiating fact is that he or she use it for both the personal as well as business calls. He/she actually changes the ISM depending on how he or she will use the phone.

Well dude these are the things about the subscriber identify module.

USIM

Here I will talk and share some of the information about the another related topic that is SIM. Firstly the question is that what does the term USIM refers to. And what does it stands for? Well let me discuss some of the things about this. Actually USIM stands for Universal subscriber identity module. Here I am providing you some of the things about the USIM. They are listed below:-

  • The first thing about the Universal Subscriber Identity Module is that, in GSM only times, there is SIM that is consisted of the hardware and the software.
  • With the advent of UMTS this naming was divided and came into existence. After the split of the name, the SIM was now an application and thus there is only software.
  • Also the hardware part was called UICC. This split was important. This was because UMTS actually introduced a new application, the Universal Subscriber Identity Module, also as USIM.
  • Well the Universal Subscriber Identity Module brought among other things, security improvements such as the mutual authentication as well as encryption keys and an address book and all.

Thus guys and girls, the USIM is nothing but a software application for UMTS mobile telephony. This actually runs on a UICC. And there is a insertion in a 3G mobile phone.
