PRO stands for patient-reported outcome. It is a technique that is used by clinical setting or trails. The main motive of this method is to collect responses directly from the patient. There is another term known as patient-cantered outcomes but this is totally different from this. This term “patient-cantered outcomes” is related to all problems of the patients on one particular concern. On the other hand patient-reported outcome get information or data from the patient. Information does not mean related to only patient it may contain other information.

Another term that is closely related to PRO is PREM stands for “patient reported experience measures” this term is totally focuses on experience of patient’s rather than outcomes.

What are the properties of patient-reported outcome?

  • Patient-reported outcome mainly contain following ideal properties –
  • conceptual equivalence capability is also there
  • It must include sufficient number of products.
  • Applications on which it is based must be conceptual.
  • PRO must be based on end-point model.
  • For all the conceptual application it must contain proper evidences.
  • PRO should be specific to all the concepts that are measured by it.
  • Patient privacy must be secret.
  • PRO if required should be reproducible.
  • All the measurement properties must be specific and easy; it means that scale usability is so easier for all people to understand and to work.

What are the Functional characteristics of Patient Reported Outcomes?

  • For calculating the standard score Response metrics are used as input
  • Response of the patients are collected to standardized or custom online questionnaires
  • Each time scoring is managed in graph form to compare it with past score board.
  • Matrix value is merged with PROMs responses

What types of PRO Instruments are available?

  • Summary of the items that are included in PRO
  • ALL Dimension are specified for instance Physical Activity Index (PAI)
  • Calculate the Utility for example uni-polar depression and Utility measure for major

Every above mentioned PROs has their own advantages and disadvantages.

Process to take part in PRO

At the time of hospital entrance, a small and short form process is complete by you before any operation. By completing a questionnaire you are consenting to data you give hold by NHS. You can go through from patient information page for further details.  It is a long process which passes through four accredited suppliers to support ROMs operation. It is the responsibility of the hospital to collect all the PROMs

This is noted that questionnaire detail is further divided into two categories one is before operation questionnaire and second is after operation questionnaire and they both are different from each other.
