There are a lot of meanings of DC. Here it is Direct Current. Actually DC is an acronym that is used for Direct Current. Well What is DC in fact? What are the things in DC?

Direct Current is nothing but a flow of electrical charge carriers. And the main things regarding DC is that the flow of electrical charge carriers always takes place in the same direction. There are a lot of things about Direct Current. One fact is that the current need not always have the same magnitude. But if this current has to be defined as that of Direct Current then in that situation the direction of the charge carrier flow must never reverse. This actually contrasts with AC. Here AC is alternating current. Well Direct Current contrasts with the AC which varies the direction of flow. There are quite a few differences between AC and DC.

What is DC?

You know very well about some of the things about the DC. Here let me tell us discussed more about DC.

First thing is that DC current is the unidirectional flow of electrical charge barriers. In other words we can say that Direct Current is nothing but the movement of electrical charge barriers and these are generally electrons. There is intensity in current and that intensity of the current can vary with respect of time. But the usual direction of flow stays the same always.

DC circuit

Well dear in any DC circuit, electron actually emerge from the negative side of the pole and moves towards the negative side of the pole. The fact is that DC that is Direct Current is produced by electrochemical and photovoltaic cells and batteries. Also the electricity available from utility mains in most countries is alternating current. This utility Alternating can be converted into Direct Current. But there is some issues regarding this.

Actually utility AC can be converted to Direct Current by means of a power supply consisting of a transformer, a rectifier and the last but not the least a filter. These things are having their particular function as well as orientation. A rectifier in fact prevents the flow of current from reversing. On the another there is the case of filter. A filter in fact eliminates current pulsations in the output of the rectifier.

Some More About DC

Well let us discuss here some more important things about the very topic that is Direct Current. There are some of the following things mentioned about Direct Current.

Sources

There are a lot of sources of Direct Current. Sources of DC can be power supplies and batteries as well. This also includes electrochemical cells as well as photovoltaic cells that already has been mentioned above. Also sources of Direct Current includes panels.

Therefore guys these are some of the sources. Also the intensity of a direct current may fluctuate accordance with the time. In other words we can say that the amplitude of Direct Current may vary with time and this very fluctuation might be periodic.

About Direct Current

Batteries and many other sources of Direct Current produce a constant voltage. And this very thing is known by the term of pure DC. This can be represented by  a straight as well as horizontal line on a graph of voltage versus time. The main thing is that the peak as well as the effective values are same exactly.

In fact the peak to peak value is zero. This is because the instantaneous amplitude never changes. In some instances the value of a Direct Current voltage pulsates or in other words we can say that oscillates at a very fact rate in accordance with the time interval. This will be in a way similar as that of the changes in the alternating current waves. Thus dear these are some of the things about Direct Current here.

History of Direct Current

Well here are some of the points about the history of Direct Current.

  • In the year of 11820, Hans Christian discovered that there is a magnetic filed and that magnetic filed is usually created by the electrical current. This was a change in the world of discovery regarding the topic of the Direct Current.
  • The discovery done by Hans made scientists all over the world relate magnetism to the electric phenomena.
  • In 1879, there was a scientist named Thomas Edison. Thomas invented an electric light bulb. Actually he improved a 50 year old idea. This was done using lower current electricity, also an improved vacuum inside the globe and a small carbonized filament, and produced a reliable as well as long lasting source of light.
  • Well Thomas Edison not only invented an electric light bulb but also an electric lighting system. And this lighting system was having all the important elements in order to make the incandescent light safe as well as practical and economical.

Thus these are some of the historic facts about the Direct Current.

Applications of Direct Current

Well guys there are quite a few uses of Direct Current. Here We are going to discuss about the topic Application of DC.

The fact is that most of the electronic circuits require a Direct Current power supply. Also Direct Current is commonly found in a lot of extra low voltage application. There are a lot of domestic applications of this very direct current. Also Domestic DC installations usually have a lot of different types of sockets, connectors, switches and fixtures from those which are exactly suited for AC that is alternating current here. This thing is mostly because of the lower voltages used. And this in fact have a impact of higher currents to produce the same amount of power. There are also many another uses of a DC machine. The thing is that most automotive application in fact use Direct Current.

Also HVDC electric power transmission systems use Direct Current for the bulk of transmission of electric power. Here HVDC stands for High Voltage Direct Current. Actually for transmission over long distances, HVDC systems may be less expensive. This also suffer small electrical losses.
