‘L’-Light

‘E’-Emitting

‘D’-Diode

LED is an acronym that is used for the light emitting diode. Light Emitting Diode is in fact a two lead semiconductor source of light.

What is LED?

Now here is the question that what really the term LED refers to and what does it mean? All the things will be shared with you dear.

As in the very beginning I have shared with you that Light Emitting Diode is source of light but it is a 2 lead semiconductor light source. One of the thing here includes is that this is a p-n junction diode. In fact this is a p-n Jn diode that use to emit light when it is activated.

Some Important Things About LED

  • When the leads are given a suitable voltage, then there electrons get recombined with the electron holes within the device, thus releasing energy in the form of photons.
  • This very effect that is mentioned is known as electroluminescence.
  • The energy band gap of the semiconductor determine the color of light.
  • One of the interesting thing about LED is that LEDs are typically small. One can imagine its size from the very point of view that it is of about less than one mm square.

These are some of the important things about LED and in the upcoming next section you will get a lot of things about the light emitting diode. So guys if you are really interested then you can go for the next section where you will get a lot of things about the very topic that is LED here which stands for light emitting diode. So guys are you ready? Just go for it.

Working Principle of LED

Well readers in this section you will get to know about the working principle of light emitting diode. Let me come on the point directly that is about the working principle of LED.

Well a p-n Jn is able to convert absorbed light energy into a proportional electric current. Also just the opposite phenomena is happened here. In other words in the presence of electrical energy, the p-n junction is able to emit light. So the same process as of the above is reversed here. This very phenomena came to be known as electroluminescence.

This very phenomena that is electroluminscence here can be defined in other respect as well. Actually the very phenomena is nothing but the emission of light from a semiconductor under the influence of an electric field.

The charge carriers recombine in a forward biased P-N Jn. This is because the electron cross from the region N. After crossing from the N region it recombines with the holes that in fact exists in the p region. Free electron are in the conduction band. You may have an idea of an energy level where there are presence of several levels of band.

Well here is the thing that free electron are in the conduction band whereas on the another hand holes are in the valence band of energy level.

Applications of LED

Well guys in the above section you have come to know about the working principle of light Emitting Diode. Till know you have come across a lot of things from the very introduction to important things about LED, also you now have some of the ideas about the working of the Light Emitting Diode, including how a light emitting diode works actually. Well let me come on the point directly that is in this section I am going to share with you some of the important applications of the topic that is Light Emitting Diode. So just go through the mentioned things dear.

There are quite a few uses of LED. I would like to mention here only the main application.

Illumination

LED applications include the case of the illumination. Illumination is one of the important one in the field of application of LED. Here in illumination light is in fact reflected from objects in order to give visual response of these very objects.

Well dear readers let me inform you that with the development of LEDs especially LEDs of high power as well as high efficiency, there arises a lot of possibilities. It became possible to use LEDs in the applications like Lighting and Illumination. As you all guys must be aware about the LEDs bulbs and lamps very well. In fact in order to encourage the shift to LED lamps and other lighting, the Department of Energy from the US has created the L prize competition. It was the Phillip who won the competition and it took about 18 months for this thing.

Let me here make you remember about the street lights and so on. Also LEDs are used as street lights as well and also in many several other architectural lighting. The light emitting diode street lights are actually employed on poles and also in the parking garages. Apart from these very things there are a lot of another examples of LEDs in the field of Lighting.

LEDS are also used in aviation lighting. Also it is used as a source of light for projectors like DLP and to backlight LCD televisions. This is what we call LEDs Television and Laptop displays.

Signalling and Data Communication

Light can also be used for transmission of data and analog signalling. Here I am going to share with you another section in the arena of application of LEDS. In the above section you came to know about Illumination properties. Here is another application.

Light can also be used to transmit data as well as analog signal. Assistive listening devices use arrays of LEDs, especially infrared LEDs, to send sound to listeners’ receivers. This is likely to be happen in the case of the many theaters and similar spaces. Also LEDs can be used to send data over many types of fiber optic cable.

There can be achievement of very high data bandwidth as Light Emitting Diodes can cycle on and off million times per second.

These are some of the information about LEDs.

Please like and share.
