What is PNR?

It is the travel record used by airline and travel agency databases and the same technique is used by Indian Railways to track the passenger travel details. PNR is a unique ten digit number printed on the top left hand corner of your ticket. In case, you want to travel by reserved accommodation which has to be quoted in order to know the status of your ticket. Also, you can use this 10 digit number to track the progress of your booking. PNR status provides complete travel booking status. Simply, it is a record in the database of a computer reservation system that contains the itinerary for a passenger travelling in Indian Railways.

Parts of PNR-

There are mainly five parts which required before booking that are-

  • Name of Passenger.
  • Contact details for the travel agent or the airline office.
  • Ticketing details (ticket number or a ticketing time limit).
  • Itinerary of at least one segment which must be same for all passengers that are listed.
  • Name of the person providing the information or making a booking.

About PNR 10 digit number-

  • First 3 digits: They tell us from which PRS (Passenger Reservation System) the ticket has been booked. The PRS is developed by CRIS and it is a total networking solution to Indian Railways.
  • Last 7 digits: They are randomly generated numbers using the Rand function. They represent no information about the ticket or journey and this is done to make the PNR number unique.

How to Check Status of PNR Number-

Indian Railways maintains PNR as the single point of transaction. IRCTC updates PNR status as and when required and also when ticket gets confirmed. There are at least 50 websites for checking PNR status.

What is PNR Status Enquiry?

PNR Status Enquiry can be described as the status of the railway tickets booking and also enquiry about it. It also informs you whether your ticket is confirmed or not or in wait listed etc. There are mainly 3 ways to heck the PNR status that are-
