What is RAW?

It is known as the primary foreign intelligence agency of India. RAW has a long faced allegation of meddling in its neighbors’ affairs. It was founded in 1968, primarily to China’s influences, after some time it shifted his focus on India.

RAW and Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has been engaged to each other against one other for over three decades. The ongoing problem of Kashmir is major problem in between RAW and ISI and it continues to fuel these clashes. RAW comes in action and accuses ISI in the July 2008 bombing in the Indian embassy in Kabul.

History of RAW-

India established external intelligence agency i.e. Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). It was founded mainly to focus on China and Pakistan’s and over the last 40 years the RAW has expanded its mandate and is credited with greatly increasing India’s influence abroad.

RAW’s powers and its role in India’s foreign policy have varied under different prime ministers. It claims that it contributed to several foreign policy successes that are-

• The creation of Bangladesh in Year 1971
• India’s growing influence in Afghanistan
• The northeast state of Sikkim’s accession to India in 1975
• The security of India’s nuclear program
• The success of African liberation movements during the Cold War

RAW’s first leader was Rameshwar Nath Kao, led the agency until he retired in the Year 1977.

Facts about RAW-

• RAW’s main motto is ‘धर्मो रक्षति रक्षित’, which basically translates to who does not observe Dharma is destroyed, while he who follows it to be protected. Dharma stands for the nation of INDIA.
• RAW came into action on September 21 in the Year 1968, after the Sino-Indian war of 1962 and the India-Pakistan war of 1965 was happened and which is exposed gaps in intelligence gathering undertaken by the Intelligence Bureau.
• At that time, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and her government, felt the need for an agency that would help to raise an alarm, and protect India before it went to was or was hit by a terror attack i.e. RAW.
• People who work in RAW are sent to various places across the country and also the world for rigorous training, including countries like United States, United Kingdom and Israel.
• In Year 1984, it play a very important role to call the Indian military and informed that Pakistan’s operation ‘Ababeel’ was planning to capture the Saltoro ridge in Siachen.
• This information helps Indian army to launch operation i.e. called ‘Meghdoot’, which forced the Pakistan army to go back before they could enter the territory.
• RAW is mainly used to hire people only from Intelligence Bureau (IB), Indian police services, and Indian military. They also started picking up students from universities.
• RAW was successful in tapping the telephonic conversation that took place between Pakistan’s army chief Parvez Musharraf and his chief of staff and Gen. Mohammed Aziz, which confirmed Pakistan’s involvement in the Kargil war.
