What is SDO?

It stands for Solar Dynamics Observatory. It is a mission i.e. done by NASA to observe the Sun since 2010. It was launched in 11th February 2010, the observatory in another word known as the Living with the Stars. In another words, it is known as the LWS program is used to develop the scientific understanding i.e. necessary used to observe the aspect that connected with the Sun.

The main aim to launch the SDO is to understand the influence of Sun on the earth and also to study the atmosphere on the small scales and it is also used to investigate how the Sun’s produce magnetic  field and after producing the magnetic field how it change  or released into Heliosphere and Geospace.

Because to observe the Sun activities and how it generate the magnetic field.

Roles of Observatory –

  • To understand the influence of the Sun on the earth.
  • It examine the Sun’s magnetic field.
  • It will study how solar activity is created and also it studies about the weather activity.

Instruments used in SDO-

Each and every instrument that used in SDO performs several measurements that tell us how and why the Sun varies .These instruments will observe the Sun at different-different range or position. It mainly depends on the three scientific experiments that are:

  • Atmospheric Imaging Assembly(AIA)
  • EUV variability Experiment (EVE)
  • Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI)

SDO Spacecraft-

  • It is known as the Sun-pointing semi-autonomous that will allow continuous observation of Sun.
  • The height of spacecraft is 4.5 meters high and 2 meters on each side and total 3100kg in weight.
  • It include an orbit i.e. known as the geosynchronous which used to allow continuous observation of the Sun and re-enable it at high data rate through a single station.

 Data Rights and Rules for Data use-

In SDO the science investigators agree to obey rules of the road developed for the sun and the earth connection and also its successor. There are many division that are known as the Heliophysics that are-

  • In this the principle investigator shall make always available to the science data community and also same as to access the method to reach the data tools for the PI uses.
  • The PI shall notify the update by the user’s which allow to processing software and calibration by the metadata and by the other documentation.
  • The uses shall be consults with the PI to ensure that they are accessing the most recent available versions of the data and also to analysis the routines.
  • It helps us to browse the product that are not intended for the science analysis and also should not be used for the purposes without consent of the PI.
  • The user shall acknowledge the source of data that are used in all the publications and the reports.
  • It shall also include the in the publications to give the information that is necessary to allow other to access the particular data used.
  • The user are encouraged to make tools of the general utility that are widely available to the community.
