What is SWAT?

Special Weapons and Tactics teams (SWAT) are special operations units in civilian law enforcement agencies such as County Police Departments, Sheriff Departments, US Marshall services, FBI etc. The SWAT team of a given agency may be called the Special Response Team, Emergency Response Team, Emergency Services Unit, Tactical Response Team among others.

It was created in the 1960s to handle riot control or violent confrontations with criminals, the number and usage of SWAT teams increased in the 1980s and 1990s during the War on Drugs and later in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks. In United States Year 2005, SWAT teams were deployed 50,000 times every year, almost 80% of the time to serve search warrants. SWAT teams are increasingly equipped with military-type hardware and also trained to deploy against threats of terrorism, for crowd control, and in situations beyond the capabilities of ordinary law enforcement, sometimes deemed “high-risk.”

SWAT Teams- Roles and Training

The exact duties differ from depending on the agency and jurisdiction involved although all SWAT units can be characterized with carrying out high risk operations that would normally be outside of the regular law agency’s capabilities. Some are given below-

  • Active shooters
  • Dealing with barricaded suspects
  • Hostage rescue scenarios
  • Counter terrorism scenarios
  • Protection of VIPs
  • High-risk arrests and searches
  • Riot control

SWAT Team- Weapons and Equipment

SWAT team weapons vary from unit to unit. The teams are typically armed with:

  • Assault rifle carbines
  • Sub machine guns
  • semi-automatic pistols

SWAT weapons are often fitted with tactical accessories such as flash lights, laser pointers, foregrips and various optics. Tactical gear carried by SWAT teams includes flashbang stun grenades, battering rams, haligan tools, ballistic shields, tactical radios and flexi-cuffs. Clothing includes body armor, protective helmets and eye wear, assault webbing for holding magazines, knee pads, gloves and rappeling harnesses.

Job at SWAT-

SWAT teams are assigned to each of the 56 field offices in the United States are capable of rapid development to crises in the area or, even, around the country and the world. SWAT members are volunteers from the FBI Special Agent force and are not full-time tactical officers; during non-mission hours SWAT members are expected to perform Special Agent functions.

Although many highly skilled tactical officers from the military or law enforcement are recruited through the Tactical Recruiting Program, these professionals must first serve as a Special Agent during a two year probationary period. Each team may include up to 42 members, many of whom have specialized training and skills necessary to perform mission responsibilities.  These specialists may include:

  • Breachers
  • Assaulters
  • Medics
  • Snipers
  • Fast Rope Specialists
  • Tactical Air Operations Officers

Each SWAT team is under the command of a Special Agent in Charge or an On-Scene Commander who monitors the situation and provides on-the-ground direction.
