So FSSAI is actually stands for Food Safety and Standard Authority of India. This is in fact a body or you can say it is an organization. In other words FSSAI is an autonomous body and this very body is actually established under the Ministry of Health and family Welfare, GOI ( Government of India). The FSSAI has been established under an act that is Food Safety and Standard, 2006. This is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in India. FSSAI is also responsible for some of the things like that of protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.

  • Currently the Chairperson for FSSAI is Ashish Bahuguna. And on the another hand the current Chief Executive Officer for Food Safety and Standard Authority of India is Pawan Kumar Agarwal.

The main thing is that It is an autonomous body and stands for the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The headquarter of the very body is in the capital city of India that is New Delhi. The main thing about the FSSAI is that It is for setting the standard of foods. FSSAI is located in the five regions. They are mentioned below-

  1. The first location is in northern part of India. This includes the head office as well where New Delhi is the head office.
  2. And the second one includes Eastern region
  3. Also the location involves North Eastern region.
  4. Western region is also one of them.
  5. Last but not the least, it includes Southern region.

Thus these are the locations of FSSAI that is Food safety and Standard Authority of India. Well by another way, you can get it that there are 6 regional offices of the authority. The autonomous authority has 6 regional offices. They are in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Guwahati and Cochin. Apart from this there are 14 referral laboratories notified by FSSAI , also 72 state/Union Territories located throughout India as well as 112 laboratories are in fact NABL accredited private laboratories that are notified by FSSAI.

History of FSSAI

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India that is FSSAI, is having a unique happenings and story. Here is some historic facts of FSSAI. given below are some of the things regarding the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India.

  • The first thing is that FSSAI was established by Government of India on 5th September in the year 2008. This has been done under the Food safety and Standard Act, 2006.
  • The FSSAI consists of a Chairperson and 22 person as members as well. This already has been discussed in the previous section.
  • Apart from the above points, the FSSAI is responsible for setting all the standards for food. This is in fact for ensuring that there is no one to deal with with and no confusion and issues in the minds of consumers, traders, manufacturers and investors.

About FSSAI

Research

Well till now we have discussed many things. Here comes another one that is Research. FSSAI has set certain guidelines and these guidelines are actually for research of food safety. Well there is the Research and Development division. And this Research and Development division is in fact responsible for research along with having following objectives.

  1. The first one is to create new knowledge. This is the first objective. And the this is to help in continuously updating and upgrading food safety standards that are compatible with international organizations.
  2. The another thing is to carry out evidence based studies in order to improve or to build policies.

Quality Assurance

Well dear another thing is here- Quality Assurance. In fact FSSAI has been mandated to perform a lot of functions  and this is related to quality as well as standards of food. These functions in addition to others include ‘Laying down procedure as well as guidelines for notification of the accredited laboratories as per ISO 17025. The FSSAI notified laboratories.There is some classification here for laboratories dear. These are classified as following-

  1. FSSAI notified NABL. This related to accredited labs 112.
  2. Another is State Labs-72.
  3. And the last one is Referral Labs-14.
